XL: OTT Not a Threat, But New Opportunities

Jakarta - President & CEO of XL Axiata Hasnul Suhaimi suggested that the players of the telecommunications industry in Indonesia should immediately adjust to the times in order to avoid destruction.

"It is time for the operator in Indonesia began to explore cooperation with OTT players like Google, Facebook, and other content bundling in packet networks," he said in Indonesian ICT Outlook 2012: Resisting the Doomsday of Big Telco Players, at Balai Kartini, Jakarta, Wednesday (03/14/2012).

According to Hasnul, the presence of OTT service was inevitable. Instead of hostility, he said, the better they are towed. Therefore, the content services offered by OTT is interesting.

According to him, in global markets, the organizer who started the OTT already publicly offered mutual cooperation for all parties. In fact, he said, most OTT has also been willing to start negotiations to divide the profits to be earned.

"The growth of OTT should not be seen as a threat, but as new business opportunities. We must address this trend by making changes. For example, by moving the m-commerce, people familiar with selling online," he said.

"Then, the operator can do the infrastructure sharing to save costs, change the unlimited to limited scheme of data plans, collaboration with OTT. Even if necessary, transformed into a join operator OTT players as well," said Hasnul.

By building a joint network infrastructure sharing, Hasnul said, it may be more efficient by 40 percent.

"For example, if we construct two radio towers and base stations can be out money Rp 2 billion, well enough to get our two spend Rp 1.2 billion alone. Money that came out not just how, is important throughout a business awoke and enjoyed together," said Hasnul.
